What Is T1D?

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune, serious, chronic, and lifelong  disease in which the immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin naturally helps us regulate our blood sugar and break it down for energy. 

T1D is caused by genetic predispositions, not lifestyle choices. 

A person, usually a child, diagnosed with T1D is a warrior. Every waking minute must be spent managing their blood glucose levels to prevent experiencing potentially fatal diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperglycemia, or hypoglycemia. 

Every carb and kilojoule spent is accounted for. No meal, activity, play time, or outing is casual, but rather a complex mathematical equation laden with consequences. 

Though we have modern monitoring devices and pumps to help us - as well as the lifesaving Canadian invention of insulin - T1D families like ours hope for a cure in the near future.
